Junior Committee and Activities
Who we are: We are a group comprising of eight members with ages ranging from 13-17 who have a passion for supporting and promoting youth sailing and events at our club. Amongst us there are club racers, regional winners and worlds and national competitors. To support the new youth sailors and new young people who want to get involved in sailing we run various events throughout the year both on and off of the water. As a team, every year we compete in the NSSA (National Schools Sailing Association) youth sailing regatta at various different venues and this year (2018) three of our members received an award from Costain for being polite and helpful, so it's safe to say that we are friendly and approachable both as a team and individually.
How you can get involved:
On the water: Every year, over the summer months we run Grebelets, which is designed to increase young sailors' confidence on the water by giving them challenging yet fun activities to do. Normally there are around 5-10 sessions per year and they are set up so that one of the last sessions sees the Grebelets take part in our club's Junior Regatta. We hope that all of these sessions will encourage the Grebelets to come down and race on Sundays, where there is always one of us willing to lend a helping hand to a junior that is struggling. As well as Grebelets we help out at junior training; helping to get sailors up to speed and teaching them how to sail.
In terms of events, we race almost every Sunday in the club Sunday races and often go to our local regional races (MKYBSA) which are run once a month on Saturdays.
Off the water: Off the water we aid the running of events. Our favourite is Spooky which is our Halloween party where we run games for young people. We also help out on the club Open Day and the RYA Push The Boat out day where we take juniors that are new to sailing out for joyrides in a variety of different boats depending on their size and confidence.
