GMSC Summer training week

We are running a number of youth sailing courses over the week. The courses are arranged in 4 streams

(A) Stage 1 - Stage 2

(B) Stage 2 - Stage 3

(C) Stage 3 - Stage 4

(D) Stage 4 - Sailing with Spinnakers

An Adult stream aimed at parents wishing to learn at the same time (not in the same course) - Only book Level 1 if you have children on one of the above courses.

The RYA Youth Sailing Scheme provides an enjoyable and progressive way to learn to sail. Each certified course provides an opportunity to record and recognise your achievements in this logbook on a dedicated log and certificate pages.

This latest and redesigned edition introduces ‘take a challenge’ sections to the syllabus pages. There is also additional information on the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme, information on progression and the instructor pathway.

A two-day course following the RYA Stage 1 Syllabus

A basic understanding of boat sailing, with some experience of steering and handling the boat

Assumed Knowledge
None

Course Content
Launching and recovery, steering, parts of the boat, basic sailing

Ability after course
Able to steer and understand basic principles

A two-day course following the RYA Stage 2 Syllabus

A range of sailing skills and knowledge to help in becoming a confident sailor

Assumed Knowledge
Stage 1 – Basic knowledge and steering ability

Course Content
Basic sailing skills, ropework, collision avoidance

Ability after course
Able to tack and control boat speed, and understand basic principles

A three-day course following the RYA Stage 3 or 4 Syllabus

Stage 3
Rigging, launching and sailing in any direction. Equivalent to Level 2 in the National Sailing Scheme

Assumed Knowledge
Up to and including the Stage 2 course

Course Content
Rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques, capsize recovery, sailing theory

Ability after course
Able to launch and sail a dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions

Stage 4
Sail a double-handed boat as crew or helm, and solve a variety of problems afloat. (optional if Stage 3 was taken in a double hander)

Assumed Knowledge
Up to and including Stage 3

Course Content
Rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques and manoeuvres in crewed boats, recovering a man overboard

Ability after course
Can launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring, and sail a crewed dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions

Stage 4
Sail a double-handed boat as crew or helm, and solve a variety of problems afloat. (optional if Stage 3 was taken in a double hander)

Up to and including Stage 3

RYA National Sailing Scheme Syllabus and Logbook (G4)
This book gives details of the syllabus of the RYA National Sailing Scheme for sailing dinghies, keelboats and multihulls with space for log entries and certificates.

The courses are available at Training Centres throughout the UK and Europe. RYA recognition means you will be taught to the RYA’s high standards ensuring your course will be safe, informative and enjoyable.

This 2014 edition includes a new layout and design along with minor additions to the syllabus such as the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme.

This third edition of the RYA Advanced Dinghy Sailing Handbook is designed to accompany the advanced sailing modules in the RYA National Sailing Scheme:
