Great Moor Sailing Club is preparing to host one of its most cherished events of the racing calendar when the Lawrence Godfrey Memorial Regatta returns on Sunday, 28 June 2026.
The annual regatta was first established in 1993 in memory of Lawrence Godfrey, one of the club’s early and most respected members. A dedicated sailor, trustee and supporter of Great Moor Sailing Club, Lawrence played an important role in the club’s development and community spirit. More than three decades later, the event that bears his name remains a fitting tribute to his contribution and a highlight of the club’s racing season.
This year’s regatta will be particularly special, as members of the Godfrey family, including Lawrence’s son Robin, will be attending. Robin shared a family photograph, helping newer members appreciate the man whose legacy is celebrated on the water each year.
Since its inauguration in 1993, the Lawrence Godfrey Memorial Regatta has become one of the club’s most enduring traditions. Generations of Great Moor sailors have competed for the prestigious Memorial Regatta, creating countless memories and adding their names to the event’s rich history.
Racing will begin at 11:00 am and will consist of four races, with two scheduled before lunch and two afterwards. Competitors’ best three results from the four races will count towards the overall standings. The first race will start at 11:00 am, with the second race following as soon as possible after the final finisher crosses the line. Afternoon racing times will be confirmed on the day.
The regatta is open to sailors of all abilities and has long been regarded as one of the most welcoming events on the club calendar. While experienced racers will undoubtedly be looking to add their names to the trophy, newcomers are equally encouraged to take part. The format provides an excellent introduction to racing, with all results decided in a single day and plenty of experienced sailors on hand to offer advice and support.
Additional prizes will be awarded for the first-placed Lady Helm, first-placed Youth Helm and first-placed Rookie, ensuring that sailors throughout the fleet have something to compete for.
The defending champions are Simon and Nicola George, who claimed overall victory in 2025 aboard their Osprey after winning two of the day’s four races. They can expect strong competition this year as the fleet assembles once again to contest one of Great Moor’s most prestigious races.
Whether competing on the water or spectating from the shore, members are encouraged to support this important event. More than a race, the Lawrence Godfrey Regatta is a celebration of the people who helped build Great Moor Sailing Club into the thriving community it is today a reminder that while races are won and lost, the spirit and contribution of dedicated club members endure for generations.
Club boats are available for hire.
