Tony Green Honoured for 30 Years of Dedication to Great Moor Sailing Club

After three decades of outstanding service to Great Moor Sailing Club, Tony Green has been awarded Lifetime Honorary Membership in recognition of his remarkable contribution to the Club and its members.

Tony recently stepped down from the Committee, bringing to a close another chapter in his long history of volunteering and leadership at GMSC. However, retirement from the Committee certainly doesn’t mean retirement from Club life, as Tony will remain an active member and continue to lead the much-valued Shed Club.

Since joining Great Moor in 1996, Tony has been a familiar and friendly face around the Club. A keen sailor, he has enjoyed both racing and cruising in his Wayfarers and other boats over the years. His sailing adventures have also taken him further afield, including a memorable voyage in 2006 aboard an Albin Vega, sailing via the Dutch and German coasts towards the Kiel Canal alongside fellow Club member Mike Freeman.

Back at Great Moor, Tony has found time to contribute an extraordinary number of volunteer hours. His service includes six years as Bosun, three years as Commodore from 2002 to 2005, and many more years as a dedicated Committee member. Throughout that time, Tony has played an important part in maintaining, improving and developing the facilities that members enjoy today.

There isn’t much around Great Moor that Tony hasn’t fixed, built, improved or tinkered with! His practical skills, knowledge and willingness to lend a hand have made him an invaluable part of the Club. Through the Shed Club, he has also brought members together, sharing skills, encouraging teamwork and ensuring that the Club’s facilities continue to receive the care and attention they deserve.

Terry Day, Commodore of Great Moor Sailing Club, paid tribute to Tony’s contribution:

“Tony has stepped down from the Committee but continues to make a big contribution to GMSC. I’m very pleased that he will still be managing the Shed Club, which is just one demonstration of his team-building and leadership skills.

His knowledge across a wide range of subjects is impressive, as is his generosity. I’m sure all members of our Club have benefited in some way from Tony’s hard work.

We look forward to seeing Tony at the Club and hope he enjoys the extra time he now has to make use of the fantastic facilities he has helped create.

I thank Tony for everything he has done, and continues to do, for our Club."

Great Moor Sailing Club has always relied on the enthusiasm, generosity and commitment of its volunteers, and Tony is a shining example of what makes our Club so special.

His Lifetime Honorary Membership is a fitting tribute to 30 years of dedication, friendship and service, and a recognition of the lasting difference he has made to Great Moor Sailing Club.

On behalf of the Committee and all our members, thank you, Tony, for everything you have done and continue to do. Here’s to 30 years — and counting!
